Notes for Henry GREATBATCH

Note from family records:
24 October 1853 - Henry apprenticed to John Corden, Butcher, of Shelton for the sum of £10. Census records: 1861 - Henry, Elizabeth and Annie are shown as living at 'Freehold Villa', Burslem. By 1871, they had moved to (76) Newport Lane, Middleport with their enlarged family. In 1881 & 1891, they are still in Newport Lane, but now at 174 with children Florence and Reginald. They also employed a live-in servant. In 1862, Henry is also recorded as a 'Butcher, of Newport Lane, Burslem' in Slater's Directory.

Henry's entry in the probate register for 1902 shows him as '...of Brooklands, Alsager, Cheshire' so he had presumably retired to the country! The executors of his will were his sons Frederick William and Reginald Bolderston, together with his wife's nephew William Tabbinor Boddington. His personal effects were valued at £555 14s 10d.

Henry is buried in the centre of St John's churchyard, near to the path. The DoB given on his headstone is 30 December 1834; it is assumed that this should be 1833, as he was baptised on 26 January 1834. The entry for Henry's birthdate in the family bible also appears to have been changed from 1833 to 1834, I am not sure why. His wife Elizabeth is buried in the same grave.

Notes for Elizabeth BODDINGTON

Elizabeth was reputed to be connected with the Boddington Brewery family. This has been checked and no direct connection has been found. (There is also a story that she was descended from an Earl of Warwick - this is probably false, but could derive from her Warwickshire ancestry.
