Notes for Henry Fletcher HANCE

British Consul on the Pearl River, at the time of the first opium war and then in the new colony of Hong Kong. His uncle, Colonel Fletcher of the Royal Marines, lost a leg at the battle of Bunker Hill in the American Revolutionary War.

There are Hances in Maryland, in a small town on the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay distinguished by a Hance Road, who are probably related.

Cap'n John Hance, much celebrated on the web, was a great adventurer and explorer who established the Hance Trail, the first route for the white American tourist down into the Grand Canyon and told many tall tales about his adventures. [342]
